Kenmore appliances were never made by Sears. They were built to order by Whirlpool, LG, Frigidaire, GE and others, and sold under one badge. So the first thing we do on a Kenmore call is read the model number, because a Kenmore washer and a Kenmore refrigerator in the same kitchen may have come from two entirely different manufacturers.
What Kenmore builds
Kenmore covered almost every category a household needed, which is why so many Orange County homes still have one. The important detail for repair is the model prefix: 110 is normally Whirlpool-built laundry, 795 is usually LG refrigeration, 253 tends to be Frigidaire, and 665 is commonly a Whirlpool dishwasher. Elite and Pro sat at the upper end of the range. Once the builder is known, the diagnosis is the same as for that manufacturer.
What we are called about most
- Top-load washer will not spin
- On the Whirlpool-built 110-series machines this is the lid lock or the shift actuator, exactly as it is on a Whirlpool or Maytag of the same era. The parts carry different numbers but the failure and the repair are identical.
- Refrigerator warm with the fans running
- On LG-built 795-series units this can be the linear compressor. On Frigidaire-built 253-series units it is more often the defrost control or the evaporator fan. The model prefix decides which of the two we investigate first.
- Dishwasher will not start
- The 665-series dishwashers are Whirlpool platform, and the usual causes are the door latch switch or the control board behind the panel. A blinking indicator on these is a stored fault code, not simply a reminder light.
- Dryer tumbles without heating
- Common across every builder that made Kenmore dryers. On electric models it is the element or a thermal cut-off that has opened, and a blocked vent run is very often the reason the cut-off opened in the first place.
