The washer stops with water still in the drum. Is that the pump?

Check the filter and the drain hose height before the pump. In these houses the standpipe often sits low and the hose loops below it, so the machine drains and then siphons water back. A blocked pump filter gives the same symptom and is the easier of the two to clear.
