Standalone freezers get a hard life. Most of them live in a garage, where inland summer heat makes the condenser work far harder than it would indoors, and where nobody notices a fault until something has thawed. The faults themselves are a short list, and the symptom usually names the part.
Upright, chest and drawer units
A chest freezer is the simplest machine here: a cold control, a compressor, and static cooling with no fan and often no automatic defrost, which is why frost has to be cleared by hand once or twice a year. An upright is closer to a refrigerator, with a fan, an evaporator behind a rear panel and an automatic defrost system to fail. A drawer freezer adds rails, a gasket that has to seal on all four sides of a moving drawer, and often an alarm that tells you the moment it does not. Each has its own failure list.
Ice across the vents
On a frost-free upright or drawer freezer, ice building over the vents or the rear panel means the defrost cycle has stopped clearing the evaporator. Once the coil is blocked, the fan cannot move air, the compartment warms, and food near the top thaws first. Removing the ice restores normal running for a few days, which is why this fault often gets reported as a freezer that fixes itself and then relapses. The actual repair is in the defrost heater, the bimetal or sensor, or the control that runs them, and the ice has to come out completely first.

Running constantly and never holding
Ice cream that stays soft at a normal setting, with the compressor running continuously, points at heat that cannot escape rather than cold that cannot be made. Condenser coils packed with dust are the usual reason, and in a garage that happens quickly. A condenser fan that has stopped does the same thing faster. Once the coils and fan are confirmed good, the next candidates are the door seal, the cold control or thermistor reporting the wrong temperature, and only then the sealed system. Ambient temperature matters too: some units are not rated for a hot garage.
Seals, drawers and alarms
A drawer freezer has to seal along a gasket that moves with the drawer, so a runner out of adjustment, a bent basket or a packet caught at the back will hold it open by a few millimetres. That is enough to frost the compartment and set off a high-temperature alarm. Chest freezer lids fail differently: the hinge springs weaken and the lid rests without sealing. In both cases the alarm is doing its job, and silencing it without finding the gap is how a full freezer gets lost overnight.
