Dishwasher Leaving Dishes Dirty: What It Actually Means
A dishwasher that leaves dishes dirty is usually still working. Water is being heated, pumped and drained; something is stopping it reaching the surfaces that need it. That is good news, because most of the causes are in the parts you can reach without tools. Work through them in order, and note whether the residue is gritty or a fine white film. The two point in different directions.
Read the residue before you touch anything
Two different faults get described in the same words.
Gritty debris on plates and in the bottoms of cups, or lumps of food redeposited on the top rack, is mechanical. Water is not reaching the surfaces, or dirty water is being pushed back over them.
A fine white or grey film covering everything evenly, glass included, is chemical. It is hardness mineral and detergent left behind as the load dries.
The first is a filter, a spray arm, a pump or a loading problem, and it is usually fixed in ten minutes. The second is water quality, detergent and rinse aid, and it is a consumables problem.
Hold a glass up to the light before you start. That single check tells you which half of this guide applies to you.
Start at the filter
Almost every dishwasher built in the last fifteen years has a manual filter in the floor of the tub, and a good share of the ones we open have never had it cleaned. It is usually a cylinder that twists out, with a flat mesh plate underneath it.
Take both out, rinse them under a tap, and work over the mesh with a soft brush. Expect labels, seeds, glass chips and a grey sludge. While the filter is out, look into the sump beneath for anything that has fallen through.
A blocked filter starves the wash pump, and the machine responds by circulating less water, less forcefully, through the same debris it failed to remove last time. It is the most common cause of dirty dishes and the easiest to put right.
Spray arms: blocked jets and arms that cannot turn
Both spray arms should spin freely with a flick of a finger. If one drags or stops, take it off (most unclip or unscrew by hand) and check the bearing and the feed tube behind it.
Then hold each arm up to a light and look through the jets. Scale and food debris block them from the inside, and a blocked jet leaves a predictable dead zone in the load. A wooden cocktail stick or a piece of stiff wire clears them; work from the outside in, then rinse the arm through.
Also check that nothing in the racks is stopping an arm turning. A pan handle hanging below the lower rack, or a tall board on the upper one, will stall an arm for an entire cycle.
Water temperature and the fill
Dishwasher detergent is formulated to work hot. Most machines want water arriving at around 120 degrees Fahrenheit and will heat it further themselves, but a long pipe run from the water heater means the first fill can arrive cold, and some short cycles never recover.
Running the kitchen tap until it is hot before starting the machine takes a few seconds and removes the variable entirely.
Under-filling produces the same symptom as cold water. If the wash sounds thin and rattly rather than steady, the inlet valve or its screen may be restricted. That is worth checking before anything is condemned, because a partly blocked inlet screen is common in hard-water areas and is not really a machine fault at all.
Detergent, rinse aid and hard water
The white film is not dirt. It is mineral from the water plus undissolved detergent, deposited as the load dries, and in hard-water areas it is the default outcome unless something is done about it.
Three things change it. Use a good tablet or powder and keep it dry, because tablets that have sat in a damp cupboard dissolve badly. Keep rinse aid topped up, since it changes how water sheets off the load instead of beading and drying in place. And use the machine’s own softener salt reservoir if it has one, which most European-built models do and most domestic ones do not.
If the film wipes off with vinegar on a cloth, it is scale, and the problem is the water rather than the dishwasher.
Loading faults that look like machine faults
A dishwasher cleans what the water can reach and nothing else. Bowls nested inside each other, a baking tray laid across the front of the lower rack, or tall items on the upper rack blocking a mid-level arm will each leave a working machine full of dirty dishes.
Face soiled surfaces towards the centre. Keep plastics on the top rack, away from the element. Leave a gap between everything, and stop cutlery nesting handle to handle in the basket.
Pre-rinsing is the other half of this. Modern machines use a soil sensor to decide how hard to work, and a thoroughly pre-rinsed load can read as almost clean and be given a short, gentle cycle. Scrape rather than rinse.
The drain, and dirty water coming back
If the tub holds standing water at the end of a cycle, or the dishes come out coated in a grey silt, the machine is not draining properly and is washing the next load in what it failed to remove from the last one.
Check the sump for debris once the filter is out. Check the drain hose where it joins the sink waste or the disposal, which is where blockages usually sit, and confirm that a newly fitted disposal has had its knockout plug removed, because that plug blocks the dishwasher drain completely.
The hose should also rise to a high loop under the worktop, or run to an air gap at the sink. Without one, waste water siphons back into the tub between cycles.
When it is the pump, the diverter or the heater
If the filter is clean, the arms spin, the jets are clear and the water arrives hot, the fault is inside the machine. The usual candidates are the wash pump or its impeller, the diverter valve that alternates water between the upper and lower arms, and on some models the circulation motor itself.
A failed diverter is distinctive. One rack cleans perfectly and the other does not, cycle after cycle, with no loading pattern that explains it.
All of that sits behind the tub or under the machine, and reaching it means pulling the unit out and disconnecting water and power. It is not a homeowner job. The heating element in particular sits in water and is wired directly to mains voltage.
What you can check yourself
- Twist out the filter cylinder and the mesh plate under it, rinse both, and brush the mesh clean.
- Spin each spray arm by hand and confirm it turns freely on its bearing.
- Hold the spray arms up to a light and clear any blocked jets from the outside in.
- Run the kitchen tap until it is hot before starting a cycle.
- Top up the rinse aid, and the softener salt if the machine takes it.
- Reload with a gap between items and soiled faces turned towards the centre.
- Check the drain hose has a high loop, and that a new disposal had its knockout plug removed.
- Scrape plates instead of pre-rinsing them, so the soil sensor selects a full cycle.
Questions
- Should I rinse dishes before loading them?
- Scrape rather than rinse. Modern machines read how dirty the water is and choose the cycle from that, so a pre-rinsed load can be given a short, gentle programme. Detergent also needs some soil to work against, particularly the enzyme component of it.
- Why is there a white film on my glasses?
- That is hardness mineral and detergent residue drying on the surface, not poor washing. Rinse aid, softener salt if the machine takes it, and a periodic descale deal with most of it. If the film wipes off with vinegar on a cloth, it is scale.
- How often should the dishwasher filter be cleaned?
- Monthly is a reasonable default, and more often with heavy use or if you never rinse. It takes a couple of minutes: twist the cylinder out, lift the mesh plate, rinse both and brush the mesh. A blocked filter starves the wash pump directly.
- The top rack cleans but the bottom does not. What is that?
- Check the lower spray arm first: that it turns freely, that its jets are clear, and that nothing hanging through the rack is stopping it. If both racks behave that consistently across several cycles, a failed diverter valve is the usual internal cause.
- Does hotter water help?
- Yes, within reason. Detergent is formulated for hot water, and a first fill of cold water from a long pipe run measurably weakens the wash. Running the kitchen tap until it is hot before starting the machine is the simplest fix available and costs nothing.
